In my humble opinion, "La tranchée" was able to achieve everything that "The Thin Red Line" couldn't: Being able to express the horrors of war in a way which is poetical and haunting at the same time, having also some of the most memorable imagery that I've seen in any other film (animated or not) before. It had an incredibly beautiful animation style (Which reminded me a little the excellent shorts directed by Gerrit van Dijk, but I like this better) but it is the impressive manner in which the scenes are delivered that made me love this short.
